Environmental Uses and Impact
Krypton is found in the atmosphere. It is extracted by a cryogenics compressor that turns the Krypton gas into liquid air. The most stable compound is KrF2.
Krypton does not effect the environment when it is not in use. Only when Krypton gas is dominant in the air, one can die by asphyxiation (lack of oxygen to the lungs). Krypton-81 and Krypton-85 can be dangerous if they get in contact with one's skin which can cause cancer and radiation poisoning. When nuclear bomb testing is going on, Krypton-85 is released into the air creating and increase of industrial pollution. The isotope is released by the reprocessing of fuel rods from nuclear reactors. |
